Now, to that quote I want to share:

Joy is what happens to us when we allow ourselves to recognize how good things really are.

Focus on the bad stuff, and it will increase

I love that! It’s such a beautiful invitation to look for the good things instead of the bad. It can be way too easy to always focus on the bad stuff happening in the world, in our own lives. And I think it’s time I, you, we start focussing on the good.

I’m not saying that you should ignore it when your foot is fire, or pretend that the bad stuff isn’t happening. But where you attention goes, energy follows. And if you keep thinking about your troubles and problems, they will magnify. Well, it will seem to you that they keep getting bigger. I’m sure you know that phenomenon.

Focus on the good

The same is true for the good. When you allow yourself to recognize the good things in your life (and yes, they are there, whether you are aware of them or not), you will start to feel the joy that you think is missing from your life.

We often don’t allow that switch in perspective because we’re trained to see the bad, not the good. Actually, I think that’s a little leftover from times when it was safer for us to always think about the bad that could happen. Predicting and anticipating the bad allowed us to survive.

Now it’s time to switch into a different gear, and see the good, predict the good, expect the good instead of the bad.

Find evidence of the good

So this is my little challenge for you for next week. Watch out for the good things in your life, and allow yourself to recognize them as that. And every time something nice happens, as small as it may be, write it down.

At the end of the week, take inventory of how joyful your life can be when you focus on the good things instead of the bad. And feel free to share you goodness evidence in the comments.
